Hmmm, having worked with children that were not avid readers in the rising fives, but have become very able in later years, I am cautious to see how this unfolds. In Scandanavia and much of Northern Europe, as well as in the United States, children start school later in life. As a result, I believe people are more confident as the move into their teens and adulthood. While I am a huge advocate of educational play and edutainment, performance management approaches in the ealry years can widen the gap in aspirations and potential IMHO.

There should indeed be a review of the literacy requirements for five year old children. According to EYFS literature children should be allowed to develop at their own pace. Not put under pressure to 'achieve' before they are ready. This can give out the message to parents that their child may be behind, when their strengths may be in other areas. Give children time to develop holistically.
